I am looking for information relating to licences in terms of if they are activated but not used, do clients get charged for activating licences?
If they activate a licence that they do not use will they be charged for it in the yearly maintenance?
I set up a SS User Usage by Day report which gets delivered to my e-mail as a pdf file. I had been able to open them. Lately, however, I get an Adobe Reader error: "There was an error opening this document. The root object is missing or invalid." I'm using Reader 9.2, which I've reinstalled. I can open other pdfs just fine w/ Reader 9.2. Did the report generation mechanism change somehow?

I work for a hosting company and we are about to set up a new server environment for our new customer. Today they are using Select Server V8 XM Edition on Windows Server 2003.
Is it possible to run V8 on newer OS i.e Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2, or does Select Server V9 have backwards compatibility with V8? Can we transfer the installation or database?

Dear All,
Does anyone have experience managing Microstation licenses for other international locations? We were looking to purchase all of our licenses in the US for our international offices. But I'm told by my account rep that Bentley can't sell licenses for out of country use. I'm a bit surprised by this and I'm wonder if they do this for other, perhaps larger accounts.
BTW, If anyone form Bentley is reading this, Microsoft and other software companies allow this.

The error message in the UsageLogProcessingService:
TRACE - Shared - SP ss_sp_insert_ServiceStatus returned 1 rows in 00:00:00.0156238
Error - UsageLogProcessingService -Service Process returned error code # - 1 - Unhandled Exception occurred during processing, see logs for details.
I can also see a previous error in the logs where it cannot write to ss_Tmp_ExplodedByDay either because it does not exist (which it does) or you do not have permissions and then it rolls back the transaction. The usage logs have not transmitted in a month. The database is not showing any errors and the services are running on the web server. I cannot do a manual log transmittal as it states there are no logs to process. Has anyone seen this before and can you make any suggestions on how to fix it?

We have a locally hosted license - XM version due to versioning issues.
We recently had to lease some additional products which apparently requires a Bentley hosted license. In the past, I have been unable to reset a server to allow a Bentley server license to be used on a PC that one time was looking at our server. Out IT guys claim we have no security settings that should prevent redefining a license server, but it has never worked.
So yesterday, I am setting up my new Windows 8 PC - which is a trip, BTW. So this PC has never seen or heard of our license server. I follow the install directions and then run the activation tool using the information provided by Bentley. It seems to work, but when I run the license tool from inside Power InRoads, it shows our server and a license in 30 day trial mode.
Since we are leasing a product that we do not have in our permanent license pool, how do I get this to work. I have logged a TR but my account guy, who is the one making us lease these seats told me to post here. So I am covering all my bases because if I'm paying for a lease I was to use it.
We have a contract with a DOT that has Bentley host the licenses for the contract and could not get that working which meant we were using one of our licenses instead of the DOT license. That is still going on so if I get this working I should be able to then get that working.

We are using Microstation V8i SelectSeries3 for more than a year now. However, last week it started crashing every two minutes. It always shows this error message. Our data manager checked our license server and haven't found anything wrong with the system. Any help/solution regarding this problem will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Is Bentley planning to improvise Deployed SELECT Server licensing in 2014?
A word of mouth information is that Bentley is planning to retire Deployed SELECT Server licensing by end of 2014.
Would be great if friends at Bentley could advise me on the future path of Bentley SELECT Server (both deployed and hosted).

I am running an older version of Microstation 7.01.00.62, the software is running the
Select Server software and is tied to an old XP computer and tied to a specific
computer name. Every 6 months this computor wiil stop working and log files
need to be cleared, then machine needs to be re-booted.
I want to upgrade the licensing software without updating the version of
Microstation if at all possible.
Can you make some recomendations?
I've read through the forums and have tried several suggestions such as submitting the license logs from the local pc but have had no success in the local pc activating MicroStation and I/RAS B products. This is verified by using the License Management Tool > Activation Status

One item of interest...I do not see MicroStation or I/RAS B in the Server Application list... I'm assuming Bentley Passport covers these apps?
How to check out from one computer and check in to the other with stand-alone single licence?
I've just had a very lengthy email from Bentley regarding the above. To be honest I'm not sure that I understand most of it and would be grateful if someone could explain. How is this likely to effcet our company which has 7 MicroStation licences and one MXSite on SELECT and a couple of non SELECT MicroStation licences.
What if we don't want to opt in to SELECT OPen Access, as the chances of use buying additional licences are slim?
Why do individuals have to be identified? I have access to SELECT and can download and install updates to all our users as required.
What project level information do you require and why?
The use of 'Quarterly Term LIcensing' will alienate the smaller companies especially if they start getting invoices for over usage.
Any help with the above would be appreciated.
We got an email a few weeks ago about the new Open Access for Select Server. We are currently looking into opting into this configuration however we are using the Deployed SS and apparently need to be on a Hosted SS. We have multiple machines in multiple offices that run both V8 and V8i and everything looks to the Deployed SS at this point.
My question is, how does the transfer from Deployed to Hosted work? Will we have to go to each machine and make sure they are looking at the Hosted SS rather than the Deployed? Does this change impact the end user in any way? From what I understand talking to our AM the switch is seamless, but she didn't know for sure the details of switching from Deployed to Hosted. I want to make sure what is going to happen before I flip the switch and suddenly our end users are out of commission and not productive. I want this switch to be as painless as possible. I'm receiving the error "The SELECTserver license as expired" on my Select Server. I've gone through the steps here: http://communities.bentley.com/products/licensing/w/licensing__wiki/3281.aspx but this has not fixed the issue. When I got through the step to request/update the license, I get the error "No sites found requiring update. SELECTserver will continue to use the existing license file."

Any ideas on my next step?
I also have a few objections and uncertainties SELECT Open Access.
1. The new hosted Select Server is in the cloud, isn’t? (As far as I know Microsoft Azure) in time where the whole world is concerned about NSA scanning the Internet for Information, not exactly a good move from Bentley. I know we in Europe are a little bit more concerned about this...
2. Who (Mr Greg Bentley himself?) can guarantee, that the over usage Bentley Claims, is actually right?
3. We (in Germany/Austria/Switzerland) have until today not bean notified about this change to SELECT Open Access
4. Is the only solution for stopping over usage, not to pay the invoices and have Bentley put our select Server on hold?
5. I'm definitely not going to pay any invoices from Bentley for "over usage"
I really don’t think this is going in a good direction.

We have a local deployed server. One user is having a problem where STAAD and RAM products have not activated. They show on the License Management tool as a trial. These product do activate properly on everyone else's machine. Microstation and PowerDraft have also activated correctly correctly on the machine of the user with the problem. I have tried manually activating and sending the logs. I have tried running the activation wizard again and reentering the activation code. I have tried reinstalling the STAAD and RAM products. Nothing has worked.
He does not receive a license when he starts the application. He can manually checkout a license from the license checkout tab. The product shows as activated with a license checked out until a certain date in the License Manager until he returns the checked out license at which point it goes back to showing the product being on a trial license and it still will not pull a license when he starts the application.
How do I get my Pre-XM products to run now that we have a Bentley Hosted License File?
I just logged into my local server and according to the Select Server Gateway Configuration tool, the Bentley hosted server is being used. Do I have to do something on the local PC's?

I was talking to my account manager and I wanted to verify what he said.
Right now, if we try a product that we do not have a license for, we get "30 days free". In other words, we get 30 days before the trusted licensing says that we do not have a valid license for the product and it stops working (ie 15 minute time-outs).
Under Select Basic Access, that logic still makes sense to me. It sees that we do not have a license for that product, therefore in 30 days it will time out.
Under Select Open Access, my account manager says that we would still get 30 days free. To me, it seems like the computer would record the usage (as an over usage--using 1 of 0 licenses available) and then after three usages (overages) we would get charged. Of course any logic can be programmed into the whole process. May I get a confirmation that under Select Open Access, we would be still be able to get "30 days free" to test a new-to-us product to see if we so desired to use it?
